The Division Series round of the 2022 MLB playoffs opened on Tuesday. One team that benefitted from a historic comeback in the Wild Card Series got a taste of their own medicine.
LP: Max Fried
The Phillies scored four early runs against Fried, who lasted just 3.1 innings – the shortest playoff start of his career. Ranger Suárez recorded an equal number of outs but was only charged with one earned run.
Philadelphia’s early barrage was enough to sustain them against a late Atlanta rally powered by Matt Olson‘s three-run homer.
WP: Rafael Montero
LP: Robbie Ray
Justin Verlander had a bad day at the office, allowing six runs in 4.0 IP. The Mariners led by a 7-3 heading into the 8th inning, but the Astros offense lifted off in the final two frames to complete a comeback victory. Robbie Ray received the call to the pen to record the final out of the game. His 0-1 sinker to Yordan Alvarez was lined into the right field upper deck for an Astros walk-off victory.
WP: Gerrit Cole
LP: Cal Quantrill
Cole had a quality start for the Yanks, allowing one run in 6.1 innings. His Cleveland counterpart, the Port Hope, Ontario-born Quantrill, was charged with all of the New York runs in 5.0 IP. Anthony Rizzo and Harrison Bader contributed two solo home runs to the Bronx Bombers.

LP: Mike Clevinger
The Dodgers offense made baseball look easy against Clevinger. He was responsible for all five Dodgers runs over 2.2 IP.
It was not so easy for them against the San Diego bullpen, which notched seven strikeouts. Thanks to the bullpen’s efforts, the Padres closed the deficit to just two runs thanks to a three-run rally in the 5th inning. The go-ahead run came to the plate for San Diego in the 6th inning after Juan Soto‘s leadoff walk and Manny Machado‘s single. Evan Phillips was able to pitch out of the jam with the assistance of a slick double play turned by Gavin Lux and Trea Turner.
This is how the #Dodgers will use Evan Phillips in the postseason. He's coming in for the 6th inning to face most dangerous part of Padres lineup — Soto, Machado, Drury (or Bell as PH). It's about the part of the lineup, not the inning.

It was smooth sailing for the Dodgers the rest of the way.
