New Chicago Cubs SP Cole Hamels made his Cubs debut versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday. He continued his strong road numbers for the season, going 5.0 IP, allowing 1 unearned run on 3 hits and 2 BB with 9 strikeouts. The veteran southpaw was able to enter the game with a comfortable lead thanks to a wild inning where the entire Northsider starting lineup faced Pittsburgh SP Nick Kingham, who was chased from the game after retiring the side, allowing 4 runs (2 unearned) on 3 hits and 1 BB. Hamels faced a bit of a jam after a fielding error by INF Addison Russell allowed OF Jordan Luplow to reach and giving up a single to OF Starling Marte with no outs recorded, but was able to strike out OF Gregory Polanco and INF David Freese before giving up an RBI single to C Francisco Cervelli and inducing a groundout by INF Jose Osuna to end the inning.
The Cubs’ other most recent acquisition, RP Brandon Kintzler, also appeared in the game, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings, with 1 hit, 1 BB and 1 strikeout.
The Northsiders went on to beat the Pirates by a final score of 9-2, and Hamels earned his first win in a Cubs uniform.
The Cubs return home for a four-game series against the San Diego Padres beginning this evening at 8:05 PM ET. Support the site by buying your tickets from SeatGeek!
