2022 World Series Game 5: Houston Wins Tiebreaker
The 2022 World Series was tied at two games after Houston Astros pitchers joined forces to hold the Philadelphia Phillies hitless in Game 4. Justin Verlander took the mound for Houston looking for a tiebreaking victory to redeem his 2022 postseason campaign, which would be his first World Series win in a total of nine starts over the course of five Fall Classics.

Verlander would pitch five innings. He struck out six Philly batters and allowed one run on Kyle Schwarber’s game-tying line drive home run to right field.
Houston took the lead in the 4th inning on Jeremy Peña‘s solo shot, the first World Series home run by a rookie shortstop.

The Astros would increase their lead to 3-1 in the 8th when Yordan Ãlvarez grounded out to first, allowing José Altuve to score.
The Phillies cut the deficit to one run in the 8th inning on Jean Segura‘s one-out RBI single.
Bryson Stott advanced to 3rd base after the single but was left stranded. Brandon Marsh struck out swinging. Schwarber’s rocket up the 1st base line was snagged by Trey Mancini, positioned near the bag in a no doubles alignment, for a groundout.

Chas McCormick delivered another key play for Houston in the 9th inning when he leaped into the right center field wall to pull down J.T. Realmuto‘s deep drive.

Pressly retired the side to end the game in favor of the visiting Astros.
The victory positions Houston to clinch a second World Series championship on home turf. Game 6 will be on Saturday night at 8:03 PM ET. Zack Wheeler (postseason: 1-2, 2.67 ERA) will be first to take the mound for the Phillies in their attempt to stave off elimination. Framber Valdez (postseason: 2-0, 1.42 ERA) will be his Houston counterpart.
