Biggio and Blue Jays Have a Day

Blue Jays prospect INF Cavan Biggio, son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, made his debut this weekend for the Toronto Blue Jays in their interleague series against the San Diego Padres. After going hitless in the Jays’ two losses versus the Friars on Friday and Saturday, Biggio and his team broke through on Sunday in a 10-1 victory. Biggio, the Jays’ starting second baseman, went 3-4 with one run scored and two RBI, one on a solo shot to the upper deck of Rogers Centre in the bottom of the 4th inning, his first MLB home run. His first MLB hit was a single to right field in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Biggio followed up his dinger with an RBI single to center field scoring fellow Memorial Day weekend call-up INF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the bottom of a four-run 5th inning.

The Jays went on to a comfortable victory to avoid a sweep, scoring 10 runs on 17 hits with no errors behind SP Marcus Stroman (3-6), who allowed one run on five hits with one BB and two SO. Despite posting an ERA of 2.74 so far this year, it was only his third victory thanks to the poor run support he has received from a team whose front office has refused to call up its most promising young prospects until well into the season.

The Jays will hit the road to face the division rival Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game series beginning on Memorial Day at 1:10 PM ET. Matchup: Aaron Sanchez (3-4, 3.79 ERA) vs. Yonny Chirinos (5-1, 3.20 ERA). Support the site by buying your tickets from SeatGeek!
