On This Day in 1999: Mark Grace’s First Grand Slam

Former Cubs first baseman Mark Grace was a mainstay for the Northsiders over 13 seasons, securing a place among the all-time franchise greats with a .303/.386/.445 slash line and four Gold Glove Awards as a Cub.

Unlike the prototypical first baseman, Gracie was not a slugger, finishing with 173 bombs over a 16-year MLB career. On this day in 1999, Grace hit his first career grand slam off Darryl Kile in his 6,137th MLB at-bat in a 13-12 win against the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field.

Grace would go on to hit just two more grand slams in his MLB career, once more for the Cubs on July 26, 2000 and one as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 13, 2001.
