Weekend Injury Recap: LA and STL Lose Star Players; Cueto to See Specialist
The weekend was full of bad tidings for teams around the National League as stars went down with injuries.
On Saturday, the 15-19 Dodgers, already set back by medical issues with IF Corey Seager, OF Yasiel Puig, IF Justin Turner, P Rich Hill, P Alex Wood and P Hyun-Jin Ryu, released a report that their ace P Clayton Kershaw was to be placed on the 10-day DL with biceps tendinitis in his throwing arm. With Seager, one of the team’s core position players, out for the remainder of the season due to the need for Tommy John surgery, another injury to a Dodgers star will make it difficult for the team to climb out of their 8-game hole behind the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks.
The St. Louis Cardinals also lost a star player on Saturday when C Yadier Molina got nailed in the junk by a foul tip of a 102 mph fastball thrown to Cubs INF Kris Bryant. He immediately left the game and underwent emergency surgery for a “pelvic injury with traumatic hematoma.” The Cardinals walked off the Cubs 8-6 in extra innings, but it may have been a pyrrhic victory for the Redbirds as RP Bud Norris and OF Tommy Pham also exited the game early with injuries. Pham, however, did appear as a pinch hitter in the Sunday night game against the Northsiders, so he may be on day-to-day status. Here is a GIF of the Molina incident for those of you who like watching train wrecks.

Finally, the San Francisco Giants released news about their SP Johnny Cueto currently on the 10-day DL with elbow inflammation. Cueto, who had been lights-out to open the season with a 0.84 ERA, has an appointment with specialist Dr. James Andrews scheduled for today. According to Giants manager Bruce Bochy, there will be further news about Cueto’s status forthcoming after the visit.
Have a healthy week, everyone! Tickets for upcoming games are available on SeatGeek.
