Javy Being Javy

Last night, the Chicago Cubs played the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Cubs were the victors by a final score of 8-2 thanks to a strong start by SP Jon Lester (5.2 IP, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 SO) and a resurgent Cubs offense that broke the game open in the 9th inning.

The 9th inning rally featured a magical moment from Cubs INF Javier Báez that Cubs fans have come to expect this year. After a walk to the leadoff batter, C Willson Contreras, and a 1-out single by INF Daniel Murphy, Báez stepped to the plate to face Tigers RP Victor Alcántara. “El Mago” fouled a ball off his shin, falling to the ground in pain. After a brief visit by the Cubs manager and trainer, Báez stepped back in. Alcántara then brushed him back with an inside pitch, trying to take advantage of the injury to the Cubs shortstop, but Báez hit a 3-run shot to left on Alcántara’s 1-1 pitch.

This prompted a fan sitting my my section to say, “That’s why he’s an All-Star this year!”

The first-place Cubs return home for a four-game series with the Cincinnati Reds opening at 8:05 PM ET tonight. Support the site by buying your tickets from SeatGeek!
