Detroit Tigers great and future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera hit MLB career home run number 499 against the Baltimore Orioles on August 11. It would be eleven days until he homered again. His milestone dinger came in the top of the 6th inning in Sunday’s series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays when he clubbed a Steven Matz changeup to right center field, taking his place as the 28th player to hit 500 bombs in MLB history. The game-tying hit was one of several such blows in a see-saw affair against Toronto decided in extra innings (box).

Cabrera is one of just nine members of the 500 HR club who have also maintained a career batting average above .300. He joins baseball legends Hank Aaron and Willie Mays as the only MLB hitters with at least 500 homers and 2,955 hits on a career batting average above .300.

The Tigers defeated the Blue Jays by a score of 5-3 to take the rubber match of the series. They will head to Busch Stadium to face the St. Louis Cardinals for two games starting on Tuesday night at 7:45 PM ET as Cabrera chases the 3,000 hit milestone. Casey Mize (6-6, 3.69 ERA) will take the ball for Detroit against Cards ace Jack Flaherty (9-1, 2.68 ERA).
