On This Day in 2009: Mariano Rivera Records 500th Save

On June 28, 2009, New York Yankees 13-time All Star RP Mariano ‘Mo” Rivera became the second major-league pitcher to convert 500 career saves behind longtime San Diego Padres RP and Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman in a Subway Series interleague matchup with the New York Mets at Citi Field. This game also featured Rivera’s first career RBI, as his spot came up in the top of the 9th inning. Rivera worked a bases-loaded walk from fellow star closer Francisco “K-Rod” Rodríguez to force in a run and give the Bronx Bombers a 4-2 lead over the Mets. He then took the mound in the bottom of the 9th to close out the game in yet another Yankees victory. The future Hall of Famer and Yankees legend would finish his 19-year career with a total of 652 saves.
