Ronald Acuña’s Milestone Home Run

Since the Chicago Cubs’ rain-soaked weekend in DC was a complete shitshow and the makeup of Sunday’s game on Thursday is likely to be postponed yet again thanks to the expected arrival of Hurricane Florence, I’ve decided to write about more cheerful events from this weekend.

In a season that has been marked by historic achievements by other rookie players, such as Los Angeles Angels P/DH Shohei Ohtani, Atlanta Braves rookie OF Ronald Acuña Jr. hit his 25th home run of the season on Sunday, making him the seventh MLB player under the age of 21 to hit 25 bombs during a season. The other players in this club are Eddie Mathews, Orlando Cepeda, Al Kaline, Tony Conigliaro, Frank Robinson and Mel Ott. Mathews, Cepeda, Kaline, Robinson and Ott are all Hall-of-Famers.

Acuña is currently hitting .293/.367/.581 with the aforementioned 25 home runs and 53 RBI and is .342/.445/.746 with 12 home runs during his last 30 games, making him a leading contender for NL Rookie of the Year honors along with Washington Nationals OF Juan Soto. The Braves are currently in first place in the NL East, with a 4.5 game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies and will next face the San Francisco Giants in California at 10:15 PM ET tonight.
