Tigers Sweep White Sox from Division Race

The Chicago White Sox’s playoff outlook was bleak after a three-game sweep delivered by the Cleveland Guardians at Guaranteed Rate field to close the week. The last-place Detroit Tigers added a sweep on the South Side over the weekend to eliminate the Sox from contention for the division crown and a guaranteed playoff berth.

The home team took an early lead with Yo√°n Moncada‘s 4th-inning solo shot.

Dylan Cease tamed the Tigers’ bats with six scoreless innings and five strikeouts. His strikeout total was matched by his Tigers counterpart Tyler Alexander, who allowed one run over six innings.

Riley Greene stole the show from the starting pitching performances with a 4th-inning home run robbery against Andrew Vaughn, which set the stage for the Tigers’ late rallies.

Reynaldo L√≥pez replaced Cease in the 7th inning. After Ryan Kreidler led off with a single, V√≠ctor Reyes‘s double brought him home to tie the game.

Harold Castro‘s leadoff single against Graveman in the 8th inning started a three-run Tigers rally. Ten-year veteran Jonathan Schoop drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out single.

The Sox’s six consecutive losses to eliminate them from the division race are the fitting wet fart to wrap up a disappointing season on the South Side. While the Southsiders have yet to be mathematically eliminated from the Wild Card race, they are currently 7.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot and underperforming at the worst possible time. Expect major changes to the squad in 2023, which I believe are overdue after the team failed to make deep postseason runs in the previous two seasons.
